PASTSTEPS
Independent Product Concept | UX/UI Design | Information Architecture
PROJECT OVERVIEW
PastSteps is a proposed digital storytelling platform that connects personal memories, historical events, and places through maps and timelines. Instead of organizing information in a conventional social media feed, the concept uses Story Cards anchored to a geographic location and a date or date range. People could explore how a neighborhood, building, event, or individual changes over time.
MY ROLE AND PROCESS
I originated the concept and have been developing its product direction, user experience, and information architecture through iterative research, scenario planning, and AI-assisted design discussions. The work draws on my background in multimedia, interface design, visual communication, and interactive storytelling.
The design process has included defining the core Story Card structure, mapping relationships among stories, exploring navigation through time and geography, and considering how people might contribute, discover, organize, and share material. Use cases have included family archives, local history, education, memorials, curated tours, and fictional narratives. Privacy controls, human authorship, and discovery without popularity rankings are deliberate design choices.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
The central challenge is making a large, interconnected collection of stories easy to explore without turning it into another attention-driven social network. Maps, timelines, linked cards, and curated collections provide the proposed navigation framework. Additional concepts include following updates to a story and organizing reunions or future events around shared memories.
CURRENT STATUS
PastSteps is in the concept development and product definition stage. The core principles, proposed content model, primary use cases, and interaction directions have been explored. It is not yet a launched software product; technical implementation and usability validation remain future work.
NEXT STEPS
The next phase would focus on interface prototypes, testing the experience of creating and exploring Story Cards, refining the information structure, and evaluating mapping technologies and development partnerships. A small pilot with a local-history or community storytelling use case could help validate the approach before broader development.
